Kanakavalli's latest Motif Spotlight series turns to the mythical creatures that come to life on the kanjivaram — the iruthalai pakshi (two-headed bird), yali (a composite leonine creature that is part-lion, part-horse and part-elephant) and parakum kuthirai (winged horse).
These fantastical creatures are drawn from South Indian temple architecture, ancient insignias as well as mythology, and are rendered in exquisite stylistic detail on the drape.
Each of these is a powerful symbol — of victory (iruthalai pakshi), protection (yali) and freedom (parakum kuthirai) — with deep cultural and mythological significance. Unlike some of the kanjivaram's softer, more delicate motifs, these creatures are imbued with a certain strength and majesty.
Emphasising the bold layout of the kanjivaram, they bring an intricate beauty and sense of magic to the silks.
