Kanakavalli Kanjivaram Silk Sari 25-595-HS001-08240
Kanakavalli's November pick for The Beautiful Drape is a simple kanjivaram whose beauty lies in its timeless elegance. Classic in its form, colours and embellishments, this kanjivaram celebrates the drape's geometric layout.
The body of the kanjivaram in a dual shade of mustard yellow is woven with kasa kasa kattam, literally translating to poppy seed checks, in raspberry red and black. This delicate pattern, as fine as the tiny seeds, becomes more clearly visible when the sari is draped. The borders feature a contrast-hued selvedge in raspberry red and leaf green and manga buttas (paisleys) in gold zari, filled with v-shaped vanki patterns inspired by the traditional South Indian armlet. On the pallu, in crimson red shot with black and attached in the benth technique, is a central band of seeprekku patterns in gold zari, inspired by the fine teeth of a comb, and flanked on either side with dotted, pearl-like muthu lines also in gold.
As versatile as it is beautiful, the kanjivaram showcases a thoughtful interplay of colour with occasional zari highlights.
The zari in this sari contains 25% silver and 0.3% gold.
