Kanakavalli Kanjivaram Silk Sari 25-595-HS001-06989
Kanakavalli's July pick for The Beautiful Drape is a kanjivaram sari whose beauty lies in its simplicity. The understated elegance of the embellishment allows the drape's colours and dramatic layout to shine.
While the body of the kanjivaram in lilac shot with pearl grey is unadorned, the shot tone resulting from different warp and weft colours, lends it a rich depth. The contrast borders in chestnut brown shot with black, attached using the laborious korvai technique, feature thazhampoo reku or temple designs where they meet the body. Woven on the borders are pearl-like muthu, benaras twill patterns and kattu rudraksham, all in contrast ruby red silk, flanked by delicate seer lines in zari, topped with arai bhugodi moggu or triangle buds.
The pallu also in chestnut brown is attached to the body of the sari in the benth technique, and is embellished with bands of benaras, vanki (chevron designs), mayil kann petu (peacock eye patterns) and jadai nagam (a motif inspired by a traditional hair ornament shaped like a snake) with a central seeprekku band, all in rich zari.
The thoughtful interplay of colour and the introduction of delicate details in silk thread alongside zari make this sari's classic beauty truly timeless.
The zari in this sari contains 25% silver and 0.3% gold.
