Poornima weds Sumit
Kanakavalli Bride Poornima and Sumit swiped right on each other in 2017 on a popular dating app. There was an immediate connection between the two of them and it didn’t take long for them to realise how special their relationship was.
Sumit had an elaborate proposal planned for March 2020, involving both their grandmothers, parents and siblings coming to Chicago. However, the pandemic hit and he had to cancel everything. He devised a new plan, but then tested positive for COVID-19 a few days prior. Finally, when it was safe for the couple to meet again, Sumit took Poornima to the park near her condo, overlooking the Chicago River.
He pretended he needed to tie his shoelaces, and then pulled the ring out of his pocket and popped the question! The day was filled with surprises, including an engagement photo shoot, a house filled with rose petals, and a video featuring hundreds of messages of love and blessings from their friends and family.
For Poornima, the best part of planning the wedding was finding ways to celebrate their personality and culture in each experience, with elegance and whimsy. Their theme was tropical elegance, featuring décor in shades of red, pink, navy, gold and cream, with tropical flowers and foliage to pay homage to their Indian roots.
Their wedding ceremony blended Telugu and Bengali traditions, just as their wedding logo did – with a banana leaf representing Poornima’s Telugu roots and a tiger symbolising Sumit’s Bengali background.
Poornima says that being married has been like living with a best friend. They now have a dog together named Truffle, and she is the apple of their eye.
For the wedding, Poornima wanted a classic sari in the beloved bridal shade of red. She envisioned a sari that she could wear again and that could become a family heirloom piece.
Since they planned their wedding during the pandemic, Poornima had to do all her shopping online. As soon as she saw her wedding kanjivaram on the Kanakavalli website, she knew it was the one. She says it embodied South Indian elegance and tradition exactly as she had imagined.
A big thank you to Poornima for being a gorgeous Kanakavalli Bride and sharing the story of her wedding with us. We wish her and Sumit a lifetime of love and laughter.
