Amulya weds Akshay
Kanakavalli Bride Amulya and Akshay met through a dating app in San Francisco amid the pandemic in 2020. After a month of messaging, they had a picnic date at Golden Gate Park. Amulya says their love was like a slow burn – growing from a spark to a strong flame.
Three years later, Akshay suggested a picnic in Chicago and, while they were waiting for friends, they began to play a game of Monopoly Deal, their favourite card game. Unbeknownst to Amulya, Akshay had secretly added a custom card to the deck and he surprised her by proposing with a card that told her to “collect a diamond ring!” He then got down on one knee and asked her to marry him in Telugu, her mother tongue.
The wedding was a delightful celebration of Telugu, Punjabi and Marwari cultures – a romantic dream come true for Amulya. Planning it was a creative outlet she thoroughly enjoyed – from making wedding graphics to planning the décor and designing her outfits.
They had a beautiful Telugu ceremony in Udaipur, and while Amulya expected it to be a solemn ritual, she ended up having so much fun that she almost choked on her laughter, forgot to pose for photos and ripped her blouse! She enjoyed every second of the wedding.
One of the most memorable moments from the big day was when fresh flowers from the mandap dropped into Amulya’s lap during the ceremony. The elders of the family found the symbolism beautiful – as though the heavens were raining flowers into her lap to bless her, Akshay and their marriage.
While shopping for her wedding sari in Hyderabad, Amulya invited all the women of her family to visit Kanakavalli with her. She wanted to pick a kanjivaram that felt authentic to her personality and style.
Amulya says she loved how Kanakavalli doesn’t only focus on the glamour of silk saris, but also on the centuries-old kanjivaram craft. The associate at the store explained the story behind how the sari was woven, the collection it belonged to and how best to care for it. Amulya says it was a very special moment to pick the sari she would get married in with all the important women in her life by her side.
A big thank you to Amulya for being a beautiful Kanakavalli Bride and sharing the story of her wedding with us. We wish her and Akshay a lifetime of love and laughter.
