Our October pick for The Beautiful Edit is a classic Kanakavalli kanjivaram that is dramatic in its detail and striking in its beauty. Perfect for a season of festive and special occasions, this kanjivaram features exquisite motifs and classic patterns in gold zari.
The body of the sari is woven with vaira oosi stripes. Literally translating to 'diamond needle', these delicate zari lines sparkle against the silken drape. Dotted on the body are diamond kamalam buttas, or lotus flowers with diamond shapes at their centre. The borders feature kattu lines, rudraksham and a band of benaras twill patterns woven in zari. In between these elements are large annam motifs, with smaller alternating mayil (peacock) and parakkum kuthirai (winged horses) forms, edged on top with a row of delicate moggu (flower bud motifs).
The pallu is stunning, with rows of moggu, benaras designs, mayil, manga buttas (paisleys), kuthirai (horses) and yanai (elephants), separated by a band of diamond kann (eye) designs, all in rich gold zari.
