Kanakavalli Bride : Shruti

Shruti weds Nathan
Kanakavalli Bride Shruti and Nathan first met on Hinge in January 2023, where their early conversations were full of puns and hilarious made-up stories. They shared the same sense of humour, and when they first met a few days later, Shruti was struck by how kind and funny Nathan was. In true New York fashion, they went to a little pizza place around the corner for their first date. Seven months later, the couple moved into their first apartment together in that very same neighbourhood!

Fast forward to an evening many months later, when Shruti came home from work to the smell of something delicious cooking in the kitchen. She saw roses on the floor leading to their little balcony, where Nathan was waiting for her, wearing a kurta she had bought him from India, with music playing in the background. Nathan got down on one knee and proposed with a little blue beaded ring, which has since become Shruti’s favourite piece of jewellery – one she wears every day.

For Shruti, the best part about planning the wedding was the fact that there was almost no planning involved at all! She and Nathan decided to have an intimate ceremony at New York City Hall with just their family. They wanted to match their outfits just a little bit, so Nathan wore Shruti’s father’s maroon tie with a pocket square that matched the pallu of her sari! The best part about their big day, says Shruti, was seeing their families come together, and experiencing so much love.

Life mostly feels the same as before, says Shruti, but she and Nathan love envisioning their future together, and at the moment it looks like there’s a lot of travel on the horizon!

A few years ago, Shruti tagged along with her cousin’s fiancée to pick out her wedding sari. When they visited Kanakavalli, they were all blown away by the collection. As Shruti began to think about her own wedding, she knew that she wanted something light and elegant; something that she could wear again and again, for varied occasions. Her mother immediately suggested Kanakavalli and visited the Chennai store to find the perfect sari.

Since Shruti was in New York, she would get on video calls with her mum on every Kanakavalli visit. She remembers the team at the store being wonderful – sharing extra images and videos of different saris. After browsing the repertoire, Shruti finally picked a gorgeous, lightweight Gadwal sari – just what she was looking for. She saw it in person just one day before her wedding when her parents landed in New York. And, she says, it was a dream to wear.

A big thank you to Shruti for being a beautiful Kanakavalli Bride and sharing the story of her wedding with us. We wish her and Nathan a lifetime of love and laughter.
