Kanakavalli Bride : Sandhya

Sandhya weds Amrith
Sandhya and Amrith first met at a Diwali event in Germany three years ago. They were instantly drawn to each other and ended up talking for over twelve hours – and were still chatting at 8am the next day! The very next day, Sandhya asked Amrith if they should get to know each other more and start dating. Two years later, when she introduced him to her parents and her father asked them what their plans for the future were, Amrith said he would like to marry Sandhya if her parents approved. He looked at her as though he knew what her answer would be. The moment was simple and sincere, says Sandhya, just like Amrith!

Sandhya says planning a wedding in India while living in Germany was only possible because of her mother and sister, who took her mood board and brought it to life! The couple’s celebrations were spread across three cities, because Sandhya is from Tamil Nadu, Amrith is from Kerala and her family lives in Hyderabad. The wedding turned into a beautiful blend of all the traditions they both grew up with.

From the Pandha Kal ceremony to seek the blessings of their ancestors, to a fun mehendi function that reflected both their cultures, every event carried its own charm. Sandhya and Amrith had a wedding ceremony and reception in Coimbatore, another reception in Thalassery and a cocktail party in Hyderabad. One of Sandhya’s favourite parts of the predominantly Kongu style wedding was a beautiful part of Amrith’s culture. Not only does the groom tie the thaali for the bride; the bride also gets to tie a gold chain around the groom’s neck – a ritual that added a sense of reciprocity, perfectly representing the couple’s relationship.

On the day of the wedding, the couple got stuck in heavy traffic on their way to the venue. Sandhya started to panic and was almost in tears when Amrith held her hand and reminded her that the most important thing was that they were getting married – nothing else mattered, not the traffic nor the calls from her family. Sandhya felt immediately reassured and calmed down; a moment that will always stay with her.

Sandhya’s mother has always loved silk saris and believed that true kanjivaram craftsmanship is rare to find these days. In 2019, the family visited Kanakavalli in Coimbatore and it instantly became a store her mum approved of. Since then, they have never shopped anywhere else for their kanjivarams.

Sandhya says the store itself is an experience, and the sales executive who helped them understood her tastes within ten minutes of meeting her. They ended up finishing all their shopping in under an hour, with saris for the bride as well as the bride’s mother and sister. For Sandhya, the most memorable moment was receiving her bridal sari in a tray with kumkumam, turmeric, jasmine flowers and bangles. She said it felt like a beautiful, spiritual blessing as she began her journey into married life.

A big thank you to Sandhya for being a beautiful Kanakavalli Bride and sharing the story of her wedding with us. We wish her and Amrith a lifetime of love and laughter.
