Kanakavalli Bride : Disha
Disha weds Srivatsan
Kanakavalli Bride Disha and Srivatsan met on a dating app and when they swapped numbers, she was convinced it would not lead to anything because she is not a texter. But Vatsan had her hooked - she was texting, giggling and always nose-deep in her phone! A few months later they met for a date, and the rest is history.
Vatsan planned a dream proposal spanning all their favourite spots in Raleigh - writing clues that Disha had to decode. They ended up at the North Carolina Museum of Art, one of Disha's favourite places in the city.
As he handed her the final note, he went down on one knee and popped the question. Funnily enough, Disha had a ring of her own, as she had planned to propose to Vatsan that night too!
Disha and Vatsan had a traditional engagement over a Zoom call as they couldn't travel to India. Their parents were on stage performing the ceremony while they were on a huge screen behind with their dog Argos, who stole the show!
For the wedding, Disha wanted to pay homage to her late grandmother, Annapoorna (Poppy) Paati, so they designed a logo with poppy flowers that was stamped and embossed on favours and decorations to represent her presence. They had a welcome dinner and mehendi, a traditional Tamil Brahmin ceremony and a reception.
Disha says the best part about the wedding was that it brought together all their friends and family who mean so much to them. Disha's favourite part of the wedding was the oonjal ceremony. She wore a sari that reminded her of her Paati, and her cousins and aunts formed an intimate huddle around the swing, singing to her and Vatsan. She says this was an incredibly moving moment, and one she won't forget.
Taking sartorial inspiration from her mother, grandmother and aunt who personify grace, Disha found that Kanakavalli's kanjivarams reminded her of the saris they wore, each one gorgeous and leaving a long-lasting impression. She did all her wedding shopping virtually, shortlisting a few saris from the website.
Disha's parents then went to the store with her on a video call and in less than twenty minutes, the team helped them find all the saris she'd picked. She says the hospitality extended to her parents was exceptional, and they ended up buying many more saris than they actually needed!
A big thank you to Disha for being a beautiful Kanakavalli Bride and sharing the story of her wedding with us. We wish her and Vatsan a lifetime of love and laughter.
