Kanakavalli's March pick for The Beautiful Drape is a classic kanjivaram sari whose embellishments juxtapose the geometric against the intricate.
The innate geometry of the queen of silks is beautifully emphasized by the coming together of dramatic checks and ornamental motifs.
The body of this kanjivaram in black is adorned with veldhari kattam, checks woven in the extra warp technique, in gold zari. The borders in parrot green shot with black, with a selvedge in black, are embellished with large zari buttas - the iruthalai pakshi (a two-headed bird signifying victory) and the fierce elephant-headed gaja yali. Elephants and annams (mythical, swan-like birds) adorn the pallu, alongside kattu rudraksh, banaras twill patterns and moggu (flower bud motifs), flanking a central band of diamond kann or 'eyes', all in gold zari.
The zari in this sari contains 0.3% gold and 25% silver.
