More on the performances below...

The series kicks off on the 6th of December, with a  double-billing that includes two dance performances - 'Entheos' by Nilava Sen and 'When Walls Dance' by Prachi Saathi.

6:30 PM - ENTHEOS BY NILAVA SEN

Nilava Sen is an accomplished dancer, practitioner and educator in the fields of the Uday Shankar Technique of Dance and Bharatanatyam, who is committed to preserving the timeless art forms while innovating within them. His contemporary dance performance 'Entheos' draws on the mystic philosophies of Baul minstrels and Sufism, following a protagonist and his search for god within himself.

7:30 PM - WHEN WALLS DANCE BY PRACHI SAATHI

Prachi Saathi is an award-winning Bharatanatyam dancer who conceptualises multi-style group productions as well as solo dance performances. Her performance at Kingsley weaves together Bharatanatyam, spoken word and music against the background of animation and Warli tribal art, exploring the theme of our relationship to nature.

Friday, the 13th, Kanakavalli presents two dance performances as part of 'Rasa' curated by Aalaap at Kingsley - 'Putanaa' by Eesha Pinglay and Swarada Bhave and 'Kaal:Taal' by Mahima Gulechha.

6:30 PM - PUTANAA BY EESHA PINGLAY AND SWARADA BHAVE

A dyanamic young Baharatanatyam dancer, Eesha Pinglay has performed in critically acclaimed works around India and the world. Swarada Bhave, an artiste with a nuanced approach to the Bharatanatyam form, is the co-director of Swarada Nritya Sanstha. Both Pinglay and Bhave are dancers with the Sankhya Dance Company and their performance 'Putanaa' explores the duality of life - the masks we wear and what stirs within - through a mythological character.

7:15 PM - KAAL-TAAL BY MAHIMA GULECHHA

Mahima Gulechha is a Kathak dancer with a deep interest in Indian literature, mythology and poetry. Her performance of four Kathak choreographies explores the nuances of the art form.
On Friday the 20th December, we present two beautiful music performances at Kingsley - 'The Madras Mehfil' by Vandana Srinivasan and 'Sing a Lullaby' by Gurupriya Atreya and Vedanth Bharadwaj.

6:30 PM - THE MADRAS MEHFIL BY VANDANA SRINIVASAN

Vandana Srinivasan, a singer, songwriter, performer, and recording artist, is trained in Carnatic and Hindustani music. Her unique musical act, 'The Madras Mehfil,' features ghazals, bhajans, timeless film classics and semi-classical genres.

8:00 PM - SING A LULLABY BY GURUPRIYA ATREYA AND VEDANTH

Gurupriya Atreya is a singer and arts curator trained in Indian classic music. Vedanth Bharadwaj is a multi-faceted musician and sound designer who dabbles in several genres. Together, they conducted a year-long series of workshops during the pandemic, resulting in 'Sing a Lullaby,' an immersive experience that brings together lullabies in various languages, from around India and the world.

The final evening of 'Rasa' at Chinmaya Heritage Centre on December 27th, 6:00 PM onwards, showcasing 'Varnamala,' is curated by Mavin Khoo. He presents a triptych: three Varnams, three dancers, three paths of artistic discovery. All the compositions will be from the musical trove of the inimitable Tanjavur Quartet.

CURATOR’S NOTE

For more than three decades, Dance has been the focal point for Mavin’s energies. The universe of Dance has nourished, enriched, tormented and elevated him, and he now seeks to give back to the world of Dance. Mavin seeks to offer not only his physical and emotional investment, but wants to create - with his experience and his monetary input - a performance opportunity for dancers he is working with or has followed and sees promise in. This year, Mavin is honoured to be joined in this venture by Kanakavalli and Alaap who have supported his creative vision with a shared ethos of fidelity to the arts.

Mavin's Varnamala picks are -

With guidance and direction from Sri A. Lakshmanaswamy, Pallavi showcases the beauty of a structured exposition defined by clarity of intention and meaningful artistic deliberation.

Divya and Mavin have a shared love for the coming together of Music and Dance and Mavin’s wish is to celebrate Divya’s rare dual skill in both art forms.

An immersion into Shringara is what Mavin has asked Pritam to present through his Varnam this evening.

And with Mavin's Varnamala on the 27th of December, we bring our Margazhi Edit to an end, till next year!
