Motif Spotlight : Mayil Chakaram
In the motif spotlight series, Kanakavalli explores the classic forms that embellish the kanjivaram. The mayil chakaram is a traditional pairing of two of the most beloved motifs of the craft - the peacock and the circular wheel or chakaram. The delicacy of the mayil, ubiquitous across arts, architecture and sculpture in India, is balanced by the geometric intricacy and circularity of the chakaram motif with its rich spiritual and cultural significance. The peacock is a symbol of royalty also associated with elements of worship. The two motifs dot the body of a kanjivaram, or are enclosed within checks, often appearing on the pallu. The classic combination beautifully highlights the silken drape, woven in rich zari or fine silken yarn.
