Kanakavalli's June pick for The Beautiful Drape is an exquisite kanjivaram from the Figured Silks collective of jacquard embellished weaves. These saris showcase a delightful interplay of palette and pattern that adds depth to the sumptuous silks.
Our kanjivaram for the month features an intricately embellished body, with veldhari stripes forming a jacquard pattern in tonal silken thread. The jacquard work ends in a temple pattern just above the borders in an interesting use of the technique. The borders themselves are simple, balancing out the rich detail and complexity of the jacquard designs on the body. They feature peacocks and chakarams in gold zari that adorn two bands - one woven in gold tissue and the other in a contrast colour alongside a selvedge that beautifully frames the sari. The pallu is classic, embellished with delicate geometric patterns, paisley motifs and twill designs in rich gold zari.
The juxtaposition of the ornate detail of the sari's body against the elegant simplicity of its borders and pallu is visually striking, as is the occasional pop of contrast colour amid the more subtle tonal hues.
This sari, available in several colour ways, features zari with a composition of 40% silver and 0.4% gold.
