This February, Kanakavalli's pick for The Beautiful Drape is a gorgeous monotone kanjivaram featuring intricate jacquard detailing. The motifs shimmer like stars against the silk, their delicacy set beautifully against the sari's geometric layout.
The body of the kanjivaram is adorned with fine diamond and star motifs in gold zari. The weavers refer to these tiny, floating jacquard motifs as 'button buttas'. The borders feature classic patterns, including benaras twill bands, kattu manga (mango or paisley) and rudrakshas, contained within vertical lines, alongside benaras stripes and a row of moggu or flower bud motifs. Gold zari bands and pillaiyar moggu reku or temple motifs are woven on the pallu, lending a bold geometry to the sari; the perfect foil to the delicacy of the body's embellishments.
