Kanakavalli Bride : Shruthi Raju

Shruthi weds Shreesha

In the Kanakavalli Brides series, we feature beautiful brides who chose Kanakavalli for their special days, sharing the stories of their weddings with you.

February's Kanakavalli Bride Shruthi doesn't believe in love at first sight, because she and her husband Shreesha were friends first. Inseparable since Grade 5, they missed each other terribly when Shreesha had to go to a different school in 2004. They both knew deep down that they liked each other's company, and that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. So there was no proposal, just a quiet, mutual understanding that they would get married.

Shruthi and Shreesha's wedding was in the Madwa Brahmin style, as per the groom's family traditions. However, they also incoporated elements of the bride's mother's Iyengar family rituals, and those of her father's Vysya family. Two days before the wedding they had a Nandi Pooja and Mehendi ceremony, followed by a Haldi ceremony the next day. The actual wedding rituals consisted of several games that were meant to teach the couple about the philosophy of life - each ritual had a special meaning and significance.

Before the wedding, Shreesha was in Japan on a project while Shruthi was in the UAE, and both their parents were in India. Despite being so far from home, the bride and groom were closely involved in planning at every stage. Shruthi arrived in Bangalore just three days before the wedding, but made a quick two-day trip a month before, during which she did all her shopping for saris and jewellery. It was crazy, but also her favourite part of planning.

"Kanakavalli has always been an inspiration for bridal kanjivarams", says Shruthi, and the Bangalore store was her first stop. She chose three saris within an hour, and kept one aside for her reception which she wanted to think about. Shreesha wanted to buy her the reception sari, and after looking around some more they returned to Kanakavalli for the one she had first chosen!

A big thank you to Shruthi for being a beautiful Kanakavalli bride, and for sharing the story of her wedding with us! We wish her and Shreesha a lifetime of togetherness.
