The Divided Drape

Ambaranth

Kanakavalli presents Ambaranth, a collection of kanjivaram silks that play with the form of the classic sari, allowing for an exploration of layout and colour to create designs that emphasise the drama of the drape. Ambaranth, meaning horizon in Sanskrit, encompasses the partly pallu kanjivaram, the muppagam and the half and half layout kanjivaram, as well as a selection of borderless layouts, among others.

Viewing the sari as a canvas, each drape in Ambaranth is an expression of the shifting horizons of the kanjivaram's elements - the pallu, pleats and border - reinventing the grammar of the traditional drape to create dramatic forms that showcase the rise and fall of the weave.
