Kanakavalli Kanjivaram Silk Sari 23-599-HS001-02010
Kanakavalli's August pick for The Beautiful Drape is an exquisite kanjivaram silk sari that showcases the skilful weave techniques and thoughtful interplay of colour that define the craft.
The body of the kanjivaram in brown shot with black is adorned with fine dotted stripes known as muthu oosi (meaning pearl needle) in gold zari woven in an extra-warp technique. The borders in blue shot with black feature dotted checks known as beetu kattam enclosing manga or paisley and round vanki kamalam motifs. This is flanked by delicate kadhir moggu, benaras weave, muthu lines, and vanki, all in zari. The unusual spacing of motifs within checks on the borders requires the experienced hand of an extraordinarily skilled weaver. The pallu is embellished with gold kadhir moggu, benaras and diamond kann designs.
The sari is at once understated in its elegance and dramatic in its geometry.
The zari in this sari contains 24-26% of silver and 0.3% of gold.
