Kanakavalli Kanjivaram Silk Sari 040-01-106165
One of Kanakavalli's November picks for The Beautiful Drape, this stunning kanjivaram is woven on a traditional adai loom, featuring laborious hand weaving techniques unique to the craft, and showcasing a splendid interplay of colour with rich gold zari.
The sari has four distinct shades in perfectly contrasting and complementary hues. The hot pink pallu is attached to the black body using the classic petni technique in which the weaver joins the threads of the body to the threads of the pallu entirely by hand. This ancient and painstaking process allows the pallu to be woven in a contrasting colour to that of the body of the sari, which is woven with checks in green sandwiched between bands of gold zari. The sari has korvai borders, the jointed border attachments that are a defining feature of the queen of silks and offer themselves to a myriad possibilities for colour play. The borders follow the ganga jamuna layout, one side woven in mustard yellow and the other in green, and are adorned with traditional mayil kann or peacock eye motifs and salangai (anklet) patterns in fine zari.
The adai loom was traditionally used before the advent of jacquard weaving, and while it requires precision and the meticulous skill of the weaver, it also lends itself to designs woven in exquisite relief. The pallu of this sari is beautifully adorned with elaborate arch shapes enclosing iruthalai pakshis, framed by paisley and twill patterns mirroring each other to form composite designs.
This sari is woven with zari containing 50% of silver and 0.4% gold.
