Kanakavalli Kanjivaram Silk Sari 040-01-105662
Part of Kanakavalli's September Beautiful Drape curation, this stunning heirloom kanjivaram is woven on a four-pedal loom in the ettu kol set up, in which a pattern is overlaid upon the base fabric of the sari.
This a dual shade of green sari features weft-based checks in gold zari and vermillion red, executed using two complex weaving techniques. The horizontal stripes are woven in ettu kol, forming a delicate twill pattern laid over the base colour of the kanjivaram, and this is not visible on the reverse side of the sari. The vertical stripes are woven in a different technique, forming what is known as a benarasi design.
The pallu is woven in adai and features gold peacock motifs, amid hints of vermillion red and a band of gold twill designs in ettu kol. The borders feature two sets of vermillion red lines known as seeru, enclosing delicate mutthu seeru in gold zari, wrapped around a vanki or chevron pattern in rich zari. The top of the border is lined by tiny gold bhugodi triangles, inspired by temple architecture.
This sari uses a fine zari with a 50% silver, and 0.3-0.4% gold composition.
