Varna Sutra : Antar Anga - Body In Weave

After exploring the magical world of motifs, we turn to the form of the kanjivaram sari's body, with a focus on kattam and vari or checks and stripes, in Varna Sutra: Antar Anga (meaning 'within the body' in Sanskrit). The weavers of Kanchipuram play with contrasts and visual effects as they create striking patterns on the kanjivaram's bold layout. The mathematical precision with which the sari's colours are laid out and the geometric format of the drape are emphasised by the myriad expressions of checks and stripes across the body. Drawing inspiration from varied local, cultural contexts, each type of checked and striped pattern on the kanjivaram is a distinctive entity, unique to the design vocabulary of South Indian textiles.
