Kanakavalli's Motif Spotlight series is a celebration of the classic forms that embellish the kanjivaram. This curation showcases one of the most beloved motifs of the craft: the mayil or peacock.
The peacock is a classic motif on the kanjivaram sari, often paired with chakrams, woven within checks, or appearing alongside other animal and bird motifs. A symbol of pure grace and beauty, the national bird is also associated with the worship of Lord Murugan, who is depicted on a peacock vahana (vehicle). It is considered a motif of royalty and regal splendour. The delicate form of the peacock is deeply rooted in the symbolism of Kanchipuram, from its temple architecture to its handloom craft, and the bird is exquisite on the silken drape.
