Kanakavalli’s embellished collaborations bring together a gamut of crafts, married to the beauty of the kanjivaram.
In this first collective, discover the distinctive, painstaking and ornate kalamkari technique executed on the drape. Entirely drawn freehand, then filled in with hand-painted colours (distinctive of the Srikalahasti style of kalamkari) this is a testimony to the beautiful lexicon that makes up this craft. Juxtaposed with the kanjivaram, the resultant language is both vibrant and arresting, mixing the curves and stylistics of the drawn and painted kalamkari embellishment with the structured geometry of the kanjivaram.
This collection is in collaboration with Dwaraka, an organisation committed to working with rural artisans in Srikalahasti to preserve the traditional art of kalamkari. The kanjivarams in this collaboration are embellished with ornate kalamkari patterns, ranging from florals and foliage to stylised peacock forms, in natural colours and vegetable dyes. The palette of earthy tones is beautifully highlighted with occasional bursts of vibrant colour and the subtle shimmer of zari.
The hand processes involved in kalamkari soften the silk of the kanjivaram, lending it a butter-soft hand feel, at once sumptuously bodied and easy to drape.
