Drawing from The Ekavalli Foundation's film project Fall, directed by Gia Singh Arora, Kanakavalli curates a selection of classic kanjivarams in shades of red. The colour echoes the themes of love and longing explored in the three-part series that weaves together poetry, movement, dance and film technique.
Red is the colour of passion and romance; its exquisite depth on the kanjivaram silk mirroring the depth of emotion expressed in Akam poetry of Sangam literature, a source of inspiration for this initiative. In the Fall films, the sari becomes the object of affection: the dancer dances with the kanjivaram, rather than draped in it.
The gorgeous palette, encompassing crimson, vermillion, scarlet and deeper shades of burgundy, comes alive through the movement of the weave through the air and in the hands of the dancer. Kanakavalli celebrates the drama of the kanjivaram in the Fall film project (which you can view online and read about here) as well as in this curation of stunning red saris.
