Kanakavalli's September pick for The Beautiful Drape is an exquisitely embellished kanjivaram that brings together intricate motifs and vibrant colours.
The body of the kanjivaram in scarlet shot with black is embellished with gold checks enclosing kamalam buttis, while dramatic temple motifs or thazhampoo reku are woven above the borders. The orange borders shot with black have contrast moplah lines in green, kalasam moggu, mutthu seeru, kamalam and rudraksh motifs, and vanki patterns in zari, all enclosing a band of diamond patterns known as kann petti woven in orange thread.
The pallu, interlocked in the benth technique, features delicate mango motifs or manga moggu, yalis and paisleys, as well as lotus motifs entwined with vines called kodi kamalam and a very ancient form of the horse motif known as mann kuthurai, with a creature atop its back. These details flank a band woven in benaras twill, lined by thuthiripoo motifs separated by vertical lines. zari.
The zari in this sari contains 36% of silver and 0.4% of gold.
