Kanakavalli's September pick for The Beautiful Drape is a stunning kanjivaram that features a delightful interplay of colour and detail on the sumptuous silk, perfect for a season of festivities.
Intricate embellishments in contrast and complementary silken yarn as well as in rich gold zari highlight the jewel tones of the sari. The body features muthu kattams or pearl checks, delicate dotted checks woven with extra warp and extra weft threads, enclosing round jacquard buttis in a contrasting colour. The borders of the kanjivaram are woven in the same hue as the base fabric of the body, but appear as though they are in contrast thanks to the ornate detailing on the body. Rows of paisleys, muthu seeru and rudraksh enclose bands of vanki and diamond patterns on the borders, all in rich gold zari. The pallu features rows of gold zari peacocks and yalis, enclosing intricate geometric patterns.
This exquisite kanjivaram combines classic motifs and techniques with a contemporary play on colour, lending richness, depth and a joyful beauty to the weave. Available in a few lovely and festive colourways, this month's edition of The Beautiful Drape features zari with a composition of 25% silver and 0.3-0.4% gold.
