Kanakavalli Kanjivaram Silk Sari 040-01-113055
Kanakavalli's pick for The Beautiful Drape this May is a striking kanjivaram from the Vault collective of heirloom saris.
This kanjivaram is unusual as it is woven entirely by hand on an adai loom without the use of jacquard, and yet does not feature the traditional intricate adai motifs. Instead, the body of the sari is embellished with checks in rust orange, magenta and green, along with gold tissue, a pattern that emphasises the geometry of the layout. The introduction of zari adds a delicate iridescence and visual depth to the bold multicolour checks. The adai loom allows for the pethni interlock between the body and the pallu, a laboriously handwoven attachment that cannot be executed on a regular loom. Here, the checks from the body do not continue into the pallu, which is woven in yellow shot with pale beige with a temple reku design in gold tissue. The vertical stripes of the body end just above the partial korvai borders that are woven in the same hue as the pallu.
The beauty of this kanjivaram lies in the striking simplicity of the checks, the delightful colour play upon the body and the complexity of the weave technique, visible in the execution of the borders and pallu.
The zari in this sari contains 35% of silver and 0.4% of gold.
