Kanakavalli's pick for The Beautiful Drape this May is a gorgeous kanjivaram from the design-led Vault collective of classic format saris that are exclusive to the brand. Its beauty lies in the thoughtful use of colour and zari to highlight intricate details within the dramatic layout.

Thuthiripoo stripes in zari adorn the body of this kanjivaram. The contrast borders feature salangai (anklet) motifs, mutthu seeru, vanki patterns and a row of pavun (coin) and kamalam (lotus) motifs in gold, with contrast seeru highlights. Enclosed between these rows is a central band woven in the same colour as the body. The pallu is embellished with thilakam motifs, contrast seeru lines and pavun motifs, mayil (peacock) and kuthirari (horse) motifs, repeated alongside a benaras twill design in zari. The pallu is interlocked in the laborious benth technique.

The complexity of this kanjivaram lies in the use of colour for the most delicate details on the borders and pallu.
