BEAUTIFUL DRAPE : March Edition
Kanakavalli’s pick for The Beautiful Drape this March is a kanjivaram whose beauty lies in its simplicity. The understated elegance of the sari beautifully emphasises its bold geometry.
The body of the kanjivaram is woven with fine stripes in two complementary colours, with contrast korvai borders featuring traditional vanki designs in threadwork. The pallu in the same colour as the borders is embellished with vanki and seeru patterns also in silk thread.
The execution of the delicate stripes on the body relies on laborious dyeing and warping techniques. The complex korvai technique is employed for the handwoven attachment of the striking borders.
With no zari in its embellishment, this design draws from a thoughtful interplay of colour, creating a visual effect that highlights the dramatic layout and striking optic of the queen of silks.
