BEAUTIFUL DRAPE : March Edition
Kanakavalli's March pick for The Beautiful Drape is an unusual kanjivaram featuring a traditional layout and classic motifs, interpreted through a contemporary palette. The beauty of the sari lies in the subtle interplay of monochromatic hues on the sumptuous silk, highlighted with zari.
The kanjivaram's body is dotted with delicate kamalam or lotus buttis in gold zari, lending the drape a soft shimmer. The corners where the pallu meets the body of the sari are embellished with two striking composite motifs consisting of three entwined paisleys, with intricate floral patterns in gold zari. The borders and pallu of the kanjivaram feature tone on tone detailing accented with zari, with floral vine patterns inspired by the kodi visiri motif, and geometric designs on either side. The pallu is also woven with aramadam patterns, consisting of diamond shapes half filled with zari.
The tonal ornamentation, playing with light and dark complementary colours, is beautifully juxtaposed against the dramatic frame of the kanjivaram and its bold geometry. This month's The Beautiful Drape is available in a selection of pastels, as well as jewelled darks, and the zari featured is composed of 40% silver and 0.35% gold.
