BEAUTIFUL DRAPE : February Edition
Kanakavalli's February pick for The Beautiful Drape is an elegant kanjivaram whose beauty lies in its detail and palette.
The body of the kanjivaram is adorned with stylised leaf-inspired motifs woven in jacquard in contrast or complementary silken thread. The borders have bands of classic designs in zari and yarn, interspersed with delicate motifs. Rows of a Benarasi weave-inspired pattern, followed by muthu seeru, miniature rudraksha motifs, and neli stripes enclose tiny parrot motifs. The birds appear as buttas, but are executed using an extra weft, and set against a twill pattern. Another repeat of these rows encloses a band of arai maadam patterns, consisting of half filled diamond shapes. The kanjivaram's pallu mirrors the patterns of the borders, and includes a central band of diamond geometric patterns in gold zari.
The delicate intricacy of this kanjivaram's ornamentation and the interplay of colour and weave are perfectly juxtaposed against the dramatic layout of the queen of silks. Available in multiple colourways, this sari features zari with a composition of 35% silver and 0.4% gold.
