BEAUTIFUL DRAPE : April Edition
Kanakavalli's April pick for The Beautiful Drape is an heirloom kanjivaram from the Vault collective of classic format saris exclusive to the brand. This gorgeous kanjivaram is woven on a traditional adai loom, resulting in the exquisite relief of the motifs and embellishments.
The body of the sari is dotted with delicate kamalam (lotus) buttis in zari. The borders feature bhugodi triangles, mutthu seeru, and a row of lotus motifs separated by vertical lines known as kattu kamalam, all enclosing a traditional vanki pattern. The pallu is adorned with salangai moggu, mutthu seeru, a diamond-shaped floral pattern, and kodi kamalam, a variation of the kodi visiri creeper design. The highlight of the sari are the twin parrot motifs woven on the pallu, striking in relief and intricate in execution.
The use of contrast silk thread to highlight the zari embellishments on the borders and pallu of this sari requires extraordinary skill, and the careful interplay of colour lends the drape a rich visual depth. Available in several colourways, this month's The Beautiful Drape features zari with a composition of 35% silver and 0.4% gold.
